Middle Tennessee Association of Circus Arts

Welcome

My name is Chareva Naughton, founder of the Middle Tennessee Association of Circus Arts. I am an aerialist, artist and Mom. I am passionate about circus and want to help build and nurture the circus community of Middle Tennessee.

Whether you’re considering taking a silks class for the first time, you are a seasoned professional, a business looking to hire unique entertainment or a teacher looking to start an aerial studio — you’re home.  Welcome to the family!

Circus arts

In practical terms, the circus arts are ground and aerial acts. Ground acts involve manipulating your body (contortion or acrobatics), manipulating an object (hoops, poi, silk fans, fire fans, juggling, unicycle, stilts, a big ball) or interacting with a stationary apparatus on the ground (lolipop lyra, pole). Aerial acts involve working with an apparatus suspended from the ceiling (aerial silks, straps, lyra/hoop, sling, net, trapeze, flying trapeze, aerial pole).

Circus may fulfill your personal goals of increasing strength and flexibility. Or you may kick it up a notch with showmanship by telling stories through movement, mime, clowning, song or dance. Add costumes, make-up, sets, props — the creative potential is limitless!

Safety first

These activities are dangerous. Personal responsibility is paramount. That means knowing what is safe and what is not safe. If you are new to the Circus Arts, find a qualified instructor at a local studio. Learn what safe rigging looks like.  Properly warm up your body and use crash mats.  Follow common sense safety protocols such as never rig an apparatus from a tree. Have a buddy to train with. Even the most experienced aerialists can get into trouble and need assistance. Please, please, please do not teach yourself a drop from Instagram.
